About this Waltham P.S. Bartlett

Hand-engraved across the back of this 1901 Waltham is the square and compass of Freemasonry, cut deep and still crisp a century and a quarter later. A gentleman commissioned this watch to carry a quiet declaration of brotherhood in his pocket every day of his working life, and it's that choice, more than the movement inside or the case around it, that makes this particular P.S. Bartlett worth your attention. Waltham shipped tens of thousands of Model 1883 Bartletts. The ones that left the factory and then had a Masonic brother commission engraving like this are a different animal entirely.

The movement is housed in a gold-filled case by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company, one of the great Gilded Age case houses out of Theophilus Zurbrugg's industrial empire in Francisville. By 1901 the firm was turning out some of the best gold-filled work in the country, and this one shows why. The hinges are tight, the gold is unworn through at the high points, and the Masonic engraving on the back is sharp enough that you can run a thumbnail across it and feel every line.

Inside sits a 17-jewel P.S. Bartlett, nickel-finished, open-face and pendant-set, adjusted, and built on the full-plate layout that defined the Model 1883. The broad plate gives the damascening room to breathe, and it catches the light beautifully as you tilt the watch in the hand. The grade was named for Patten Sergeant Bartlett, the long-serving foreman of Waltham's plate and screw department, and the name stayed on the movements for decades because buyers knew what it meant: an honest, well-finished workhorse of American horology.

For three centuries Freemasonry has called itself a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols, and no symbol is more central than the one cut into the back of this case. The square teaches a brother to square his actions by the rule of virtue. The compass teaches him to circumscribe his desires and keep his passions within due bounds. For a Masonic gentleman of 1901, pulling this watch from a vest pocket to check the time was also, quietly, a daily reminder of obligations taken in a lodge room nobody else at the table knew about.

1901 was a hinge year. Queen Victoria died in January, closing a reign that had run longer than most men then living had been alive, and in the same month the Spindletop gusher blew in near Beaumont and the American oil industry was born in a single afternoon. By September, an anarchist's bullet in Buffalo had put a 42-year-old Theodore Roosevelt in the White House, the youngest man ever to hold the office. A Mason reaching for his watch that year was reaching into a country whose next century had, very suddenly, already begun.

The watch is excellent throughout. The single-sunk enamel dial is clean and bright, the Philadelphia case has held up beautifully, and the Bartlett movement is running exactly as it should. For a collector with a Masonic connection, or for anyone who loves an American pocket watch that carries a story on the outside as well as the inside, this is a handsome thing to own, a satisfying thing to carry, and one day a meaningful thing to pass on.

All Vintage Pocket Watches are cleaned, oiled and adjusted for accuracy and warranted for one full year from the date of purchase.
