The Elgin Grade 297 is a size 18 and measures 2 ¼ inches in diameter, a substantial pocket watch, the most popular size pocket watch at the turn of the century. This Gentlemen’s Dress Pocket Watch of the day was a symbol of prestige and status and manufactured to the highest of standards, we have an excellent example with this fine configuration. The pristine Elgin 15 Jewel Movement, very popular Silverode Train Engraved Case, Pristine Roman Numeral Dial highlighted with the original Blued Steel Hands, all in excellent condition.

The Elgin Grade 297 is a size 18 and measures 2 ¼ inches in diameter, a substantial pocket watch, the most popular size pocket watch at the turn of the century. This Gentlemen’s Dress Pocket Watch of the day was a symbol of prestige and status and manufactured to the highest of standards, we have an excellent example with this fine configuration. The pristine Elgin 15 Jewel Movement, very popular Silverode Train Engraved Case, Pristine Roman Numeral Dial highlighted with the original Blued Steel Hands, all in excellent condition. This pocket watch could have been used on the rails in 1905, with over 500 independent railroad companies some running as little as 80 miles of track. The “Railroad Standard” set in 1895 was never fully implemented, try telling an old timer this pocket watch was not good enough and he had to buy a new one. I so hope the many pictures and magnification helps in the description of this truly fine antique Elgin Pocket Watch.
This antique Elgin Dial is in pristine condition with rich ink saturation, nice to see 112 years later. The Elgin Dial is referred to as a Porcelain Single Sunk Dial. This single sunk dial has the antique Elgin logo with the classic Roman Numerals and simple hash marks for each minute around the outer circumference. Then we have a sunken sub register for the second hand. These fine dials are made using many layers of baked Silica giving the dials that deep rich Porcelain finish. This fine dial is highlighted by the beautiful and original delicate Blue Steel Spade Whip Hands. This fine Elgin Case Pocket Watch shows beautifully and is sure to be appreciated for generations to come.
The Elgin Grade 297 Model 5 Movement is and referred to as a Full Plate Movement with beautifully damasking on the Nickel Silver Plates. This fine Elgin Movement is Stem Set and Stem Wound with 15 Ruby Jewels. We also have a High-grade Micrometer Regulator, and Gold Balance Weights, flush Screw Jewel Cup Settings with a Gold Center Wheel. All designed for accuracy, this was the Scientific Instrument of the day. This Elgin Grade 297 has just been serviced and is an excellent timekeeper as designed. This fine Elgin Pocket Watch would make an excellent addition to any collection or maybe an Elgin Pocket Watch for daily ware?
