Hamilton Railroad Grade
Hamilton Railroad Grade 992B Conversion Wristwatch (1951)
Among the American railroad grades, the Hamilton 992B sits in a class of its own, and this example rolled out of the Lancaster, Pennsylvania factory in 1951. It carries movement serial number C316378, right in the heart of the model's long production life. The 992B is a 21-jewel, 16-size Railroad-grade model that was introduced in 1940 and produced through 1969. That gives it one of the longest production runs of any American pocket watch, and over half a million were made between 1940 and 1969, many worked hard on the railroad. Hamilton earned its reputation as the "Railroad Timekeeper of America" the hard way, one movement at a time, and the 992B is the final and most refined chapter of that story.
The movement here is a Grade 992B, Model 5, 16 size, with 21 jewels and a nickel finish. It is adjusted to six positions and temperature, meeting the full railroad standard that traces back to the 1893 rules under Chief Time Inspector Webster Clay Ball, when a watch had to contain a minimum of 17 jewels, be adjusted to a minimum of five positions, operate from below freezing to a scorching 100 degrees, and be accurate to within thirty seconds per week. The 992B clears that bar and then some.
The year 1951 places this movement in a fascinating moment. Truman was in the White House, the Korean War was raging, UNIVAC I was delivered to the Census Bureau, and the first coast-to-coast color television broadcast went out from the Empire State Building. The great age of the American railroad watch was winding down, and yet Hamilton kept building the 992B to the same exacting standard it had set a decade earlier.
Today, this legendary movement enters a bold new chapter. To celebrate its heritage and bring it into the modern era, this historic Hamilton 992B has been meticulously rehoused into a custom skeleton back wristwatch case crafted by Classic Watch Case Co USA. Featuring a stunning exhibition back, this masterfully executed conversion transforms a pocket-bound workhorse into a spectacular, wearable statement piece. Not only can you wear a robust piece of American railroad history directly on your wrist, but you can also turn it over at any moment to showcase and admire the mesmerizing mechanical ballet of the 992B movement.
Overall condition is excellent throughout. Inside and out, this is the kind of mid-production 992B that anchors a working collection or serves beautifully as a daily wear piece. All vintage watches are cleaned, oiled, and adjusted for accuracy and warranted for one full year from the date of purchase.
