Hamilton Railroad Grade
Flawless Hamilton Railroad Grade 992B Pocket Watch in Bar Over Crown Case (1946)
Here is a postwar example of America's most famous railroad movement: a Hamilton Grade 992B, Model 5, finished at the Lancaster, Pennsylvania factory in 1946.
Across that run, more than half a million 992B movements left Lancaster, the bulk of them destined for service on the rails. Hamilton's engineers gave the B-series a redesigned mainplate and a new Elinvar Extra hairspring. To protect the mandatory lever-set mechanism from damage, this watch is housed in a bar-over-crown case, which prevented users from accidentally pulling up the crown to set the time. These refinements made these 992Bs among the most accurate mechanical pocket watches of their era.
This particular movement is a 16-size, 21 jewel openface caliber with a nickel finish, adjusted to 6 positions and temperature. That specification placed it firmly inside the railroad-grade standards that traced back to Webb C. Ball's 1893 inspection system, and it qualified the 992B for service on virtually every American railroad still running steam and diesel after the war.
The year of manufacture gives the watch its own quiet weight. 1946 was the first full year of peace after the Second World War. American factories were converting back from wartime production, GIs were coming home on the new GI Bill, and the railroads were carrying the freight and passengers of a country settling into its postwar boom. A 992B finished at Lancaster that year would have left the factory just as that transition was underway.
This Hamilton 992B has been cleaned, oiled, and adjusted for accuracy, and is warranted for one full year from the date of purchase. A strong piece for daily carry or as an anchor in a serious American railroad collection.
