Hamilton Railroad Grade 992 Pocket Watch with a Beautiful Montgomery Dial
Founded in 1892 and named for the Scottish attorney who established the firm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Hamilton Watch Company was once one of America's finest and most prolific pocket watch makers. At one point, Hamilton accounted for over half of all pocket watches used to keep American railways running safely and on time.
This Hamilton pocket watch traces its history to 1927, the height of the American railroad era. It holsters the legendary Grade 992 movement in the Model 2 configuration: a 16-size, 21-jewel openface workhorse with a nickel finish, adjusted to five positions as well as temperature and isochronism. These are the very specifications that earned the 992 its place as one of the most trusted railroad-grade movements ever produced in America, meeting the strict standards Webb C. Ball helped establish for railroad timekeeping after the turn of the century.
The dial is a beautiful Montgomery dial, prized by collectors and railroad men alike for its bold, heavily inked Arabic numerals and minute markings around the outer track, the kind of at-a-glance legibility a true railroad-grade timepiece was required to provide. A small seconds sub dial sits perfectly proportioned to the overall layout, and the original Hamilton hands complete a classic of its type.
Mechanically, this 992 remains as it was meant to be: a robust, reliable, and accurate timekeeper, still well suited for daily carry. The movement is in excellent condition and runs as Hamilton intended nearly a century after it left Lancaster.
Condition is honest and collector-grade. The case shows only minor wear. The Montgomery dial is beautiful, with minor crazing near the center wheel. The hands are original Hamilton, and the movement itself is in excellent condition.
This Hamilton 992 is a must-have addition to an existing collection, or an ideal place to begin your journey into America's horological heyday: a fully functional, well-preserved railroad watch proudly made by Americans in America.
All our treasured timepieces are completely disassembled, expertly cleaned and oiled (using the finest quality watch oil and gear grease) and adjusted for accuracy. This Hamilton pocket watch is warranted for one full year from the date of purchase.
