Hamilton Railroad Grade
Hamilton Railroad Grade 940 Size 18 Salesman Display Case (1911)
Produced in 1911 at Hamilton's Lancaster, Pennsylvania factory, this Grade 940 arrives from the very year Hamilton's own catalog crowned it "The Eighteen-Size Railroad Timekeeper of America." Holding one from 1911 is holding a piece of American industry at full stride, the year Cal Rodgers made the first coast to coast flight and the rails still moved everything that mattered.
The movement is the Grade 940 in its mature form: 18 size, Model 1, 21 jewels, nickel finish, open face, lever set, adjusted to five positions, temperature, and isochronism. By 1911 the 940 had received both of its major upgrades, the double roller escapement and the patent motor barrel, making this a fully evolved example of the caliber that qualified for service on every railroad in the United States and Canada.
Serial number 908472 sits comfortably in the heart of 940 production. This is the movement that made Hamilton famous among railroad men, built expressly for the "Railroad Men of America" and advertised to them directly. Only around 210,000 were produced across the entire 1898 to 1928 run, and finding one in this state of preservation from the pre-World War I years is a treat.
The nickel plates carry the deep damascening that defines the Hamilton golden era, and the movement is signed with the full Lancaster, Pennsylvania pedigree. This is genuine, top-tier American railroad chronometry from the pinnacle of the 18 size era, the last generation of the big pocket watches before the trade shifted toward the smaller 16 size 992.
This exceptional movement is housed in a rare 18 size display case, historically known as a "salesman display" or shipping case. During the golden age of American watchmaking, manufacturers like Hamilton sold their movements and cases separately. Factories would ship the bare movements to jewelers in these specially constructed, glass-backed temporary cases, which protected the precision gears during transit while doubling as an instant shop display. This setup allowed a prospective buyer to safely marvel at the high-quality finishing, like this 940’s spectacular damascening, before selecting a permanent case of their choosing. Afterward, the jeweler simply shipped the empty display case back to the factory for credit. Because they were strictly utilitarian, returnable items, surviving examples are highly uncommon today, offering a deeply satisfying way to observe the heartbeat of American industrial history in motion.
Condition is excellent throughout, movement, dial, hands, and case all showing the care of a piece that has been respected across more than a century. A true blue-chip entry point into serious railroad grade collecting, and a Hamilton with real historical weight behind every tick. Cleaned, oiled, and adjusted, and warranted for one full year from the date of purchase.
