Elgin Railroad Grade
Elgin Veritas Grade 375 Railroad Grade Pocket Watch in GF Mainliner Case (1912)
Made in 1912, this Elgin Veritas arrived at a moment when American railroading was still near the height of its power. The railroads were the arteries of the country: carrying passengers, mail, livestock, raw materials, and finished goods across an industrial nation that still ran on published timetables and mechanical precision. In that world, the railroad pocket watch was not simply a personal accessory. It was a tool of safety, discipline, and trust.
This example is an Elgin Grade 375 Veritas, serial number 16092054, manufactured by the Elgin National Watch Company in Elgin, Illinois. The Veritas was one of Elgin’s premier railroad-grade movements, and this one shows why the name is so respected among collectors. The movement is a 16-size, 21 jewel, lever-set, openface watch with a nickel finish, gilt inlay, gold screw-set jewel settings, ruby and sapphire jewels, a double roller escapement, safety barrel, quick train, Breguet hairspring, and traveling-nut regulator.
The movement is adjusted to 5 positions, temperature, and isochronism, the kind of specification expected from a serious railroad watch of the period. Its ornate plate layout, deep damascening, gold settings, and gilt-filled Veritas signature give it a level of visual presence that separates it from ordinary working watches. It was built to be accurate, but it was also built to be admired.
This serial number comes from a documented mixed Elgin production run containing both Father Time and Veritas movements. The total Grade 375 / Model 15 production was only 3,050, with this variant estimated at 2,000 pieces. That makes this a more compelling Elgin than a standard production railroad watch, especially with the desirable Veritas signature and high-grade finish.
The dial is a clean white Elgin enamel dial with bold black Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, and blued steel hands. The watch is housed in a handsome gold-filled Mainliner case, giving it a strong railroad-era presentation with a coin edge bezel and plain case back.
For the collector who appreciates American railroad horology at its peak, this Elgin Veritas Grade 375 offers the right combination of historical relevance, mechanical quality, scarcity, and visual appeal. It is a serious 21 jewel railroad-grade Elgin in a striking Mainliner case, from the era when the nation still depended on watches like this to keep the rails running safely. Cleaned, oiled, and adjusted for accuracy, and warranted for one full year from the date of purchase.
