Burlington Watch Co. Dress Pocket Watch Housed in Stunning Gold Fill Hunter Case
During the latter part of the 19th century and into the early 20th century, relatively few people had access to a jeweler's shop. Into this void came the mail order business boom, and the Illinois Watch Co. stepped into this booming form of early 20th century retail with their mail-order division, the Burlington Watch Co. Pocket watches manufactured by Illinois and sold under their Burlington Watch Co. banner enjoy a huge following of collectors today. The Burlington watches are known for their artistic flair and flamboyant designs. This Burlington Grade 174 Model 4 is the perfect example of the Burlington gravitas. Produced in 1907, this size 16, 19 jewel movement is housed in an ornately engraved yellow gold fill Hunter case. The case features a stunning Japanese motif with a Phoenix on the front and a striking abstract design on the back. An uncommon yet interesting feature of this case is that it features a display back dust cover rather than a solid dust cover, meaning you can hold this watch in your hand, open the cover on the back and watch the movement in motion without fear of dust or debris interfering with its operation. The front cover opens beyond 90 degrees (typically should open to 90 degrees). This watch also featured an ornate double sunk enamel dial with an elegant Arabic numeral font unique to Burlington brand watches and highlighted by the deep purple heat-treated hands synonymous with Illinois watches. If you're looking for a watch with an elegant, artistic flair, bold style, and the historical interest of the Illinois Watch Co.'s Burlington brand, this is it. It's perfect for daily wear or to place on display in your collection.
