Vintage Ball Hamilton Pocket Watch Grade 999B Model 5 From 1947
This Ball Hamilton Grade 999B Model 5 railroad-grade pocket watch was manufactured in 1947, bearing movement serial number 1B8477. This 21 jewel openface timepiece with nickel finish and lever adjustments represents the gold standard of mid-century American railroad timekeeping.
The Ball Hamilton railroad pocket watches were produced through the legendary partnership between Webb C. Ball and The Hamilton Watch Company. Webb C. Ball never manufactured a single watch himself; rather, he commissioned the finest American watch companies of the day to build timepieces to his exacting standards. After the disastrous 1891 Kipton train collision, the U.S. railroads turned to Ball to establish the standards for "Railroad Timekeeping," and by 1893 those standards governed accuracy, durability, and reliability for the men who kept America's trains running on time. Ball later became the Chief Time Inspector for railroads stretching from Canada through the United States and into Mexico.
This particular specimen is a triple signed Ball Hamilton, with the Ball name proudly marked on the movement, dial, and case. The 21 jewel 999B movement is a beautiful example of late-era Ball Hamilton craftsmanship, and it is housed in a size 16 Ball Model desired stirrup bow case by Keystone/JBoss in 10K gold filled, measuring 2 inches in diameter. The single sunk enamel dial is flawless, set with crisp blue steel hands that read cleanly against the white background.
By 1947, the great age of American steam was drawing to a close and diesel locomotives were taking over the rails, but the railroad-grade pocket watch remained an essential tool of the trade. To own this Ball Hamilton 999B is to hold a piece of that era in your hand — a timepiece built to the highest horological standards of its day and one of the most collected of all American railroad watches.
Like all of our antique and vintage pocket watches, this Ball Hamilton has been cleaned, oiled, and adjusted for accuracy, and is warranted for one full year from the date of purchase. It shows beautifully for daily carry or as a cornerstone display piece in any serious collection.
