Folks we have another wonderful offing for your consideration in this antique Hamilton Pocket Watch Railroad Grade 940 circa 1903. This is the first in the lineage of the finest or Railroad Grade Pocket Watches the Hamilton Watch Company manufactured. The top of the line Hamilton 940 Movement has 21 jewels, motor barrel, double roller and is lever set all designed for extreme accuracy. The beautiful ornate antique damasking on the nickel plates is highlighted with gold lettering. The Hamilton Model 940 is a size 18 and measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter. These early 940’s did not have the model or other details on the movement yet, only the name and jewel count. After 1905 they did engrave more details on the pocket watch movement, making the earlier first model 940’s more desirable. This is the pocket watch that earned The Hamilton Watch Company the reputation as “The Railroad Timekeeper of America”. This truly was the scientific instrument of the day in 1903.

This is an excellent example of the ingenuity the late 18th and early 19th century American Pocket Watch a worldwide standard for accuracy and beauty in timekeeping.

This 940 is faced with the classic Hamilton Double sunk Railroad Dial. This antique dial has the desired antique Hamilton logo in the handwritten font with “Hamilton Watch Co.” spelled out, they soon after went to just “Hamilton”, then to a block font. This dial was the top of the line and for .50 cents you could upgrade from the single sunk dial to this double sunk dial. We have the raised outer circumference with the bold Hamilton Arabic numerals and every 5-minute marker highlighted in red. Then we have the recessed center chapter for the Hamilton Logo in the desired antique signed script, with a recessed sub chapter for the second hand. These ornate dials were made using 3 Copper Plates soldiered together, and then baked with many layers of Silica giving the dial the deep rich porcelain finish. This dial is in very good condition with only minor crazing still clean, bright and gorgeous! Along with this beautiful dial we have the original hands beautifully Blued Steel Railroad Spade/Spade Hands ornate and also in very good condition. This timepiece shows beautifully and is sure to be appreciated for generations to come.
