It’s that time again: time to single out a special pocket watch for your consideration. This week I’d like to bring your attention to a perfectly preserved Hamilton Railroad Grade 992. Housed in this exquisite Model 2 white gold-filled case, complete with its original packaging.
This Hamilton Grade 992 is a classic timepiece: a lever-set, open-faced railroad pocket watch. It left Lancaster in 1927, during the Hamilton Watch Company’s heyday, when the watchmaker set the standard for horological accuracy, legibility, affordability, durability and serviceability.
This 992 is a special example. Its immaculate double-sunk dial features Arabic numerals in the Old English or “Blind Man’s” font, printed on a 60-minute “Montgomery Safety Dial”. Check out this fine Hamilton at www.thepocketwatchguy.com.
The dial’s named after Henry S. Montgomery, the Santa Fe Railroad’s General Watch and Clock Inspector from 1896 to 1923. Montgomery ordered the design to increase railway workers’ punctuality and safety. This example is a highly coveted “true” Montgomery dial: the 6 stands proud and complete within the seconds sub-dial.
Hamilton’s legendary 21 jewel Grade 992 movement motivates this size 16 railroad pocket watch. Look closely. The movement is immaculate in every detail, from its solid gold chatons, to its gleaming unmolested screws, to its solid gold center wheel. Cleaned, adjusted and oiled with modern synthetics and tested to assure its original and ongoing accuracy, it’s an engine for ages.
The 992’s movement is protected by a stunning white gold-filled Model #2 Bar Over Crown case. Perfectly formed with elegant decoration circumnavigating its edges, the sought after Wadsworth case is as wonderful to hold as it is beautiful to behold.
The icing on the cake: this Hamilton 992 is available with its original pillow-soft sleeve, matching serial number box and accompanying four page booklet: “The Hamilton 992 In Railroad Model Cases.”
