Description
We are pleased to offer for your consideration this classic Hamilton Pocket Watch Railroad Grade 940 circa 1905. This fine Hamilton is housed in a rare and desired Salesman Display Case with the glass back to display this pristine movement. These Hamilton Display Cases were used at the turn of the century and not sold to the public; the jeweler or jobber of the day as they were referred would use them for displaying these fine movements for sale, without getting dirt or debris in the movement. The Grade 940 is a size 18 measuring only 2 inches in diameter, housed in this custom case. Most size 18 cases measure 2 ¼ inches; this makes for an easily carried size 18 pocket watch. The bezels on these cases snap off as opposed to screw off, so I include a case opener tool for the purpose of easily opening the case to pull the lever to set the time. These clear back display cases are a favorite with Pocket Watch Collectors and this is an excellent example with the old Hamilton Script on the top of each bezel. So few have even seen a fine pocket watch and seeing movement working is striking. We have a classic configuration with the antique Hamilton 940 Railroad Grade Movement, Double Sunk Hamilton Dial, Spade/Spade Blued Steel Hands housed in this rare Salesman Display Case all in excellent condition. I hope the many pictures and extreme magnification help in the description of this truly collectable Hamilton Pocket Watch.
This Hamilton 940 is faced with a Hamilton Double Sunk Railroad Dial. This fine dial has a raised outer circumference with the bold Hamilton Arabic numerals and every 5-minute marker highlighted in red. Then we have the recessed center chapter for the Hamilton Logo in the desired antique signed script with “Hamilton Watch Co.” completely spelled out, later going to just “Hamilton”. Then we have a recessed sub chapter for the second hand. These ornate, finest of dials where made using 3 Copper Plates soldiered together, and then baked with many layers of Silica giving the dial the deep rich porcelain finish. This beautiful dial is highlighted with the original Blued Steel Spade/Spade Railroad Hands. This fine Hamilton Pocket Watch shows beautifully and is sure to be appreciated for generations to come.
The high grade Hamilton 940 Movement has the beautiful ornate antique damasking highlighted with the lettering, truly stunning. The Hamilton Grade 940 was the first 21 Jewel Movement the Hamilton Watch Company manufactured. This was the Pocket Watch that earned Hamilton the reputation of being “Americas Railroad Timekeeper”. The total number of the Grade 940 produced was only 210,956 over 30 years from 1898 through 1928. This Hamilton 940 Movement is in pristine condition without reckless jewelers tool marks or corrosion. This is truly a classic Hamilton Pocket Watch for the collection housed in a pristine Salesman Display Case. The 940 Movements are referred to as s full plate movement and are lever set and stem wound. The movement has 21 fine Ruby Jewels, adjusted to 5 positions and is also adjusted to heat and cold. This fine movement also has a high-grade micro regulator, gold balance weights and raised jewel settings with a gold center and steel escapement. This Hamilton 940 is one of the Hamilton Watch Companies finest offerings and a rare find in such fine condition. This timepiece has just been serviced and is an excellent timekeeper.
