Rare Waltham Railroad Grade 845 Housed in this Oresilver Case
1908 was an incredible year in United States history. The historic New Year’s Ball in Times Square made its debut, the company that would become known as General Motors was formed, and Henry Ford’s first Model T rolled out of the factory. The world had begun its transition from steam and animal-powered transportation to the gas-powered automobile. While the world became increasingly mobile and interconnected, this wonderful Waltham Grade No. 845 Model 1892 rolled off the production line, was shipped to a jeweler, and from then on became a participant and witness of the heady events of the twentieth century.
We are proud to offer this monument to technological progress in a beautiful configuration featuring a Fahys Oresilver Case and gorgeous enamel double sunk Montgomery dial. The Oresilver Case is an alloy of nickel and silver, and this combination of metals makes this an unusually durable case that has stood the test of time, 113 years and counting. Meanwhile, the dial is of interest because it features a 24 hour reading in the center chapter known as a Canadian dial. The Montgomery Dial minute markings around the circumference of the dial are printed horizontally rather than the usual vertical arrangement. The dial maintains its 113-year-old luster, shining with a brilliant whiteness against which the numerals in heavy bold ink stand out wonderfully.
This watch has some minor wear and tear consistent with an active timepiece, moving about the nation, standing in crowds, running trains, riding in an automobile for the first time; in short, this watch was not left on a shelf somewhere to gather dust. Despite the minor pocket wear, this watch shows beautifully, and the silver/nickel alloy of the case creates a brilliant glow unparalleled by other metals.
If you’re looking for a timepiece rich in historic and horological value, this watch is a must-have. The date of its production places it at a major turning point in world history; in all the world’s big events since that time, this watch was there, in existence, wound by the hands of those who witnessed these events and perhaps even participated in them. For 113 years, it has been in the hands of caring owners whose pride in owning this timepiece shows by its survival in such wonderful conditions for such a long span of time.
