Elgin Key Wind Key Set Pocket Watch Housed in Desired Coin Silver Case
This Elgin Grade 13 Model 1 with key wind and key set was among the first 1,000 produced in 1873. Now, 148 years later, it has been serviced and continues to operate just as it had on its first day in existence during the tumultuous Reconstruction Era after the Civil War.
The movement features 11 jewels, a high jewel count for its day, and is housed in a beautifully preserved Silver Coin case. The silver is around .90 fine and made from melted U.S. coinage. Holding this case in your hand is best described as a warm and tactile experience coupled with the echoes of 148 years of American history.
The original crystal is present, and although it has some minor wear, it remains too fine to replace. Beneath the crystal lies an exquisite dial featuring Roman numerals and a complete hand set, all of which show some slight telltale signs of the long life this watch has enjoyed.
Its superb appearance and functionality after surviving such a significant span of history is nothing short of astonishing. With its Silver Coin case and 19th-century style, this Elgin Grade 13 is a popular historic timepiece and an excellent addition for the serious collector.
